DEWEY: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the WorldOne morning in January 1988, the librarian in a small town in Iowa discovered a tiny kitten that had been dumped through the book return slot. And here begins the endearing adventures of Dewey Readmore Books, the official library cat of the Spencer Public Library.

The book is written by Vicki Myron, who was the library director, and for all intents and purposes, Dewey's Mummy. Every sentence resonates with the love and affection that she had for this orange furball.

Vicky regales us with how Dewey would perform his key roles at the library:
- Reducing stress for all humans who pay attention to him.
- Sitting by the front door every morning at 9am to greet the public as they enter the library.
- Sampling all boxes that enter the library for security problems and comfort level.
- Attending all meetings in the Round Room as official library ambassador.
- Providing comic relief for staff and visitors whenever possible.
- Climbing in book bags and briefcases while patrons are studying or trying to retrieve needed papers underneath him.
- Generating free national and world-wide publicity for Spencer Public Library. (This entails sitting still for photographs, smiling for the camera, and generally being cute.)
- Working toward status as world's most finicky cat by refusing all but the most expensive, delectable foods - and even turning up his nose at those most of the time (Fancy Feast was his favourite, of course).
Dewey became a worldwide sensation, appearing on TV as far away as Japan, with people coming to Spencer just to meet him.
Now, as far as I'm concerned, any book that has a cat as the star is officially awesome. But Dewey is something really special. You'll laugh, you'll cry (and Mummy did a lot of that at the end) and you'll be reminded of how very special every cat is.
If you enjoy this book, you'll also love reading about the adventures of Tober, the official cat of the Thorntown Public Library, on his blog. He even looks a bit like Dewey!
And of course, no post would be a complete without a handsome pic of me!

My mum loved Dewey, and she is impressed with your comprehensive review. We always think of Tober too when we see Deweys photo.
Have a nice weekend, we see it is forecast for rain up north again. Plenty of time for curling up with a good book.
Our Mom loves this book! She said she cried the whole way through with tears of joy and sadness. In fact, she just leaked a few tears now remembering how beautiful Dewey was :)
Thank you, Misha, for a great review!
You cannot help but be moved by this wonderful story. Have tissues handy for sad and happy tears.
Dewey was an pawsome kitteh. And of course, Misha, we haz to see your picture too!!
Thanks for recommending the book - although the crying makes me wonder if I should start it (I cry very easily, especially when it comes to animals). And we love to visit Tober - he is a cool cat!
You picture is very handsome as usual!!
Have a good weekend!
We got this book from Peggy of Peggy's Place and it was wonderful! We highly recommend it. It's a little sad at the end, but Dewey had a very long and happy life, so we felt OK about it. And we think Tober looks a little bit like Dewey too.
And Misha, they should use your photo in the ads for the book! Very handsome!
We loved Deweys book....Meowm was kind enough to read it to us! We will have to check out Tobers blog.
We loved the book. We won it in a drawing that Kimo and Sabi held on their bloggie, and then when we participated in Paw it Forward, we pawed the book forward to Shelley and her many kitties so they could enjoy it too!
Maybe someday you'll review my book Misha ::Glares at Mom::
I adore this book. You picked a great read!
This is a wonderful book. Our momma is just finishing up. She cries a lot, but that's OK, we're right here to wipe her tears.
